• The combined age of the members of the applying string quartet should be 100 years or younger on March 31, 2016.
  • The winning string quartet will perform in the first half of the public concert on Sunday at 2pm at the Old Museum Brisbane
  • All members of the four finalist string quartets – winners and those who didn’t win – are asked to merge to form a chamber orchestra. The orchestra will perform in the second half of the public concert on Sunday, accompanying the winner of the Animato International Violin Competition that is held at the same time in the Old Museum Building. The winner will play one of two Mozart violin concertos, either K 218 or K219.

Stage 1

Record a string quartet session on video for about 10 minutes

Choose (parts of) one slow movement and one faster movement from any composer you like. The two movements would ideally be from different periods, for example classic and late romantic.

Save the video recording as an mp4 file

If your camera does not record in the mp4 format, you can easily transform the recorded data into an mp4 file on your computer.

Upload the file no later than March 31, 2016

Upload the mp4 file to our server. This is very easy. Upload details will be sent to your email address once you have applied to take part in the competition.

Adjudicators assess the recording

Adjudicators will asses the recording. If the recoding passes the first round, you will be invited to the second round (Stage 2). You will be informed on or before April 30, 2016 if you are invited to the second stage.

Stage 2

Record a complete string quartet

Choose a string quartet of your choice from any composer and record all movements in one go. You can omit repeats except if you plan to record a classical quartet where you would repeat sections in the Minuet and Trio.

Save the video recording as an mp4 file

Convert the recorded data into an mp4 file on your computer if the camera usees a different format for recording.

Upload the file no later than May 31, 2016

Adjudicators assess the recording

Adjudicators will asses the recording. Four finalist string quartets will be invited to the third and final round (Stage 3). You will be informed on or before June 30, 2016 if you belog to one of the four finalist striung quartets to proceed to the 3rd and final stage. If yes, you have ample time to oranize your trip to Brisbane. We can assist in recommending a close-by accommodation.

Stage 3

Perform a complete quartet in front of the adjudicators

It would be best to perform a different quartet – not the same as was uploaded in stage 2.
A time for this will be allocated for Friday, November 4, 2016 between 10am and 4pm in the Old Museum Building, Brisbane, Australia. A separate room will be made available one hour before the allocated time for the members of the string quartet to warm up.

The winning string quartet will be announced on Saturday, Novemebr 3, 10am at the Old Museum

The prize for the winning string quartet is $10,000 (AUD), that is, each player will receive $2500.

The winning string quartet will perform publicly

The winning string quartet will perform their complete quartet in the first half of the public concert on sunday, 2pm, November 6th, in the conceret hall of the Old Museum. The concert will be recorded for broadcasting.
